This spread widely through Greece and the colonies in Sicily and southern Italy from the sixth
century BC onward. It is characterized by a sturdy \b \cf1 \ATXht3 column\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 with no base and deep fluting. Its diameter shrinks progressively toward the top, where it concludes in a \b \cf1 \ATXht3 capital\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 of balanced and
essential form. Above the \b \cf1 \ATXht1 archetype\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 runs the typical frieze made up alternately of \b \cf1 \ATXht13 metopes\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 (plain or figured) and \b \cf1 \ATXht20 triglyphs\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 . It is likely that this order
was derived in part from the wooden members of older temples.\par
